Playing Catchup on Life

Jeepers crow you guys, I feel like I haven’t had a chance to breathe lately!

Frankie is doing just fine, getting loved on by our resident Talented Junior Rider(TM) and getting a bit of a break from the intense training we’ve been in. I’ll be out this week to ride, but there’s lots going on in the non-horse world that’s keeping me busy!

img_3814
Frankie LOVES his TJR. She makes him work hard, but loves on him and takes him for walks. He’s one happy boy.

First off- as I already mentioned, last week I came home to a new apartment! All my stuff is unpacked but it’s definitely still in transition as my dude moves his stuff in as well over the next few weeks. We also won’t have a couch for roughly a month (worth waiting to get one for free IMO). So it’s a bit chaotic and a bit unorganized but it’s also fantastic. I’m a 3 minute drive (or a 10 minute walk if I ever stop being a lazy butt) from work, we have tons of closet space, and are close to friends and family. It doesn’t get much better than that.

All I wanted was a porch. And we got a porch. I’m so happy.

Nick and I also drove up to the Buffalo area this past weekend for a family reunion! His mom’s side of the family gets together every year and this was my first intro to most of them before the wedding. There’s nothing quite like meeting 40+ of your future in-laws in one go. It was a serious blast- we picked cherries, we played tug-of-war with the cousins, basked in the pool, ate TONS of good food, and generally enjoyed the summertime with family.

We went for lots of golf cart rides around the farm because it was SUPER BEAUTIFUL
img_3797
This dog’s name was Buster and he was literally the best at being a dog. The happiest, friendliest, chillest black lab on the planet.

We also snuck by Niagara Falls for literally 90 seconds on our way home so I could see them while we were up there.

img_3811
SMILE OK GREAT NOW RUN BACK TO THE CAR BECAUSE THE FREE PARKING WAS ONLY 20 MINUTES

Between Lake Placid and this trip, I really don’t want to have to drive to upstate New York again for a little while. No more road trips pls.

And then things are moving forward on the wedding-planning front! All the big vendors have been booked, so we’re kinda in a lull. The big decisions are made, and it’s not reeeeally time for the detailed decisions yet. But I’ve got my checklists and timelines and spreadsheets (duh) so I think we’re still in great shape.

img_3728
Fun fact- Minted liked our save the date cards so much, they asked to use our picture. They changed the info obvi, but cool to see us in advertisements!

After a really intense few months in the thick of show season, it feels good to switch gears back to my “civilian life” for a little bit for a change of pace. I’m eager to settle into a new routine in the new place, and find a balance between training and progressing with Frankie in our off season and being a functioning adult.

Moving On: June Edition (Volume 2)

Alternate title: #Blessed

Other alternate title: Dear Lord I Have an Lovely Fiance

Olivia-58a
Lovely on all levels

Do y’all remember just about a year ago, when Roomie and I moved? It was a wildly hectic time full of travel and job changes and Upperville. As a refresher: we had a hard move-out date for our apartment. The weekend of Upperville. While I was competing with the Frankenbean, ex-Manfriend basically did all the heavy lifting of moving all my stuff out. And by basically I mean entirely.

upp_sun_blue
Literally while I was in this specific round, he was loading all my crap into a truck

I’ve been with Roomie and her ManDude in our townhouse for the last year and it’s been awesome. But it’s also time for some changes.

First off, Roomie and ManDude eloped! They were already engaged and planning their wedding, but didn’t want to wait to be married. So they straight up just got married. Ya girl here showed up to take pics and 3rd-wheel their elopement brunch because I love them so much.

So stunning and sweet and intimate and wonderful and check those shoes

It also means that I went from living with my best friend and her boyfriend (fairly normal) to living with my best friend and her fiance (pushing it a bit) to living with my best friend and her husband (full on You Me and Dupree).

The other change is that ex-Manfriend and I are also getting married soon (duh). And after close to two years of living 2+ hours apart, he just got a job offer back here so we can get our first place together! It’s been a whole long hiring process for him, so we’re beyond thrilled to have things moving forward.

So with all these big changes, the stars are aligning and we managed to find a really great place with a really lovely landlord (seriously, he’s just a delight) that’s in a great location for a great price. Our official move in date is at the end of June!

What else is going on at the end of June?

You guessed it.

Lake Placid.

So for the second year in a row, my dearest betrothed is tasked with moving for me because of a horse show. I want to promise him that this won’t become a pattern, but apparently we only move during peak show season…sooooo…????

sorry.gif

Frankie ships up on Monday, I’ll spend Tuesday driving up, and I’ll be returning Sunday.

I guess I’ll return home…to a different home?

BRB frantically trying to pack everything I own in one weekend before leaving.

I may be a little behind on the blogging front as I try to juggle packing, a week long horse show, and then arranging a new apartment and adjusting to living with my giant ManCreature while also keeping up with a busy season at work. But I pinky promise to take tons of pics and share all my adventures in Lake Placid, and I’ll pick it back up as soon as possible!

Bear With Me!

I’m in the midst of a move right now (technically homeless for a few days, but a barn friend is graciously putting a roof over my head and feeding me wine, so it’s all good) meaning I don’t have access to my computer for a bit- I’m writing this on my phone right now.

But my Upperville recap will be the first thing on the docket when I once again have a keyboard, never fear.

Spoiler alert: it was AMAZING. No ribbons in a super competitive division of about 35 horses, but rounds that felt good, that I’m proud of. Frankie was the best he’s ever been (which is saying something, we all know he’s always great) and was absolutely worth his weight in gold. Sailed through our first 1.15m like it was nothing even with my ammy mistakes, and tried to pull me to jumps even when our courses were over. I know you’re all probably getting sick of reading this, but wow. This horse is so far beyond anything I could’ve hoped for in a million years, and I am so grateful to get the chance to go out and have fun with him. I may be biased, but pretty sure I have the best horse in the world. Love my Francis!!!

Ok I got a bit carried away, but here are a few pics to tide you over until I can put a real post together.

Mother ran you past a distance to a 1.10m oxer? No problem for a FrancisBeast!
Somehow he always knows where the camera is…
Our first jump in the ring at Upperville, and he galloped right up like a champ
The traditional horse show nap. At least he knows how to relax.
This is the same horse that used to hang his legs and heave over a jump. Doesn’t look like the same horse, but it is.

Thank you so much Abby, Glendon, Manfriend, Manfriend’s Momma, and everyone else who snapped some great pics this weekend!

Can’t wait to share more details with y’all.

Moving On: June Edition

I’ve kinda roundabout hinted at some exciting news to share, and I finally have the green light to make it public:

I have a new job!

After four great years with my current company, I decided it was time to move on to a different industry. I’ll have more of a business and strategy focus in my new role- I think it’ll be really challenging but equally rewarding. And don’t worry, I already asked about flex time for horse shows (literally mentioned horse shows in my first interview) and they assured me that they’re on board with show season. They already realize where the true priorities lie.

I’m lucky that everyone at my current company has been really supportive and encouraging about this move. I’ll definitely miss seeing my amazing coworkers every day, but so many of them have become like family to me at this point and I know we’ll still spend time together outside of work hours.

Along with moving jobs, I’m also moving houses! For those of you who have followed along for a while, you may remember that Roommate and I had to move suddenly due to our old apartment flooding last June. Well, a full year has passed and we opted not to renew our lease- cue Roommate taking charge (as usual) and making awesome things happen (as usual), and we will be inhabiting a much larger townhouse just 12 minutes away. We can’t wait for more space, more sunlight, more room for the dog to play, it’s going to be AMAZEBALLS.

Derp dog just wants a comfy place to snooze

But here’s the extra fun part about moving: we don’t overlap at all with our current lease. In fact, we have to be out of our current place by a Tuesday and can’t move in until Friday. So really we have to move twice. Awesome.

June is shaping up to be wildly hectic:

Last day at new job on a Wednesday.
Two days in Richmond (Thurs-Fri) to celebrate Manfriend’s graduation.
Zooming back up north to Upperville for the weekend.
Moving out of our apartment (Monday) and couch surfing for the week.
Moving into our new townhouse (Friday).
Flying north to Rhody (Saturday) to visit family for a week.
Flying back to VA (Thursday) to celebrate Manfriend’s birthday (Friday).
Starting my new job at the end of June (Monday).

#PrayForMe #SleepWhenImDead #AlreadyExhausted

Luckily Francis continues to be an absolute rockstar despite my lack of consistent saddle time recently. We had a great lesson this week (that I need to write about because we had some fun breakthroughs) and we’re getting really excited for Upperville.

combo_notouchie
Frankie’s instinct when I botch into the combo and have to boot out is to straight up levitate through because DAMMIT MOM STOP GUNKING UP THE WORKS. Yeah, we need a lesson recap to talk about this.

We’ve also had some time to chill together lately and enjoy the (rare) sunshine. Francis enjoys these relaxing hacks around the property and I love the break too!

sunset_ears
I will never be sick of this view.

The ring expansion is in the final stages, and Trainer shared some details for the final landscaping/fencing that I think will be incredibly cool. Once everything is final and I can snap some pics, I’d love to take you all on a virtual tour of our new outdoor.

So lots of things in the works for the month of June!! I’m so excited to share updates as we make some big life changes.

Ugh Real Life

This post will feature a rare appearance of my Non-Horsey Life. Mostly because that’s been busy lately. Sorry, horse.

Francis got Thursday off to Be A Horse after our great lesson on Wednesday so that his mom could go see Riverdance. Did anyone else grow up with a weird crush on Michael Flatley from Lord of the Dance and Riverdance? And watch it endlessly on VHS? I know I’m not alone in this. They came to my area and my work wife and I HAD to go to celebrate our friendiversary and OMG IT WAS AMAZING EVERYONE NEEDS TO GO. There were dance battles and suspenders and a passionate fiddler and I’ve been tap dancing down every hallway since then. Seriously, go.

riverdance
We will both be quitting our jobs to join the cast.

I actually managed to make it out to the barn on Friday! And my heart grew three sizes that day. I almost cried. Because when I went out to get Frankie and saw that he was at the other end of the field, I started trudging out to get him. I usually call his name while I’m walking to get him, mostly so I can disturb his eating so he can feel bad about making me walk that far.

But this time I called his name. He picked his head up to see who was yelling. His big old donkey ears perked up. And he immediately galloped up to me.

Oh. My. Gosh. HE DOES LOVE ME!!!! Or he thinks I have food. OR HE LOVES ME!!!! I’ve never had a horse actually come when called and it was Magical with a capital M.

And then I rode him and he was a very good boy and I figured out how to more consistently and accurately ask for haunches-in and shoulder-in and blah blah blah he’s a very good boy and we love him very much.

frankie_looking
I didn’t get any pics of him that day, so enjoy us both looking off into the distance in an inspiring way

And that was the last time I saw Frankie for the whole weekend. I don’t think I’ve had a horseless weekend in MONTHS. Do not like. But it was necessary…

…because Roommate and I are moving!

Very unexpectedly. About a week ago (while I was at Loudoun), roommate called and told me that repairing the water damage from the flood in our apartment a few weeks ago was going to be SO extensive that we should probably just leave. She is a gorgeous amazing creature who is more organized and efficient than I could ever hope to be, and one week later we got the keys to our new place.

new_apartment view
Not the view from our porch, but the view from the communal grilling area. Well done, roomie.

We’re really happy with it- more natural light, great location, two full bathrooms so we don’t have to share a shower, gorgeous pool. All sorts of good things. And it’s basically across the street so we don’t have to move far!

But GAWD moving is the worst. It’s dusty and sweaty and packing is hard and unpacking is hard and I genuinely want to burn half of the crap I’ve managed to collect over the years. Just burn it. Or like, leave the door unlocked and hope a burglar targets us. That would be super convenient. Please someone take this off my hands.

We’re also kinda spreading out the move a bit- we got a ton done yesterday, but we don’t have a Uhaul to get the furniture over until Thursday. This makes unpacking anything almost impossible, but we’re procrastinating.

Mostly because Manfriend and his very-strong-furniture-moving-muscles have been in the Mojave for the last two weeks, and he doesn’t get back until Tuesday. When he left, we weren’t even talking about moving. So this will be a fun little surprise for him.

nicholas_at
Welcome back from the desert, darling! Now please move all my junk.

Roommate and I plan to let the big strong devil dogs handle the big stuff. My contribution that day will be pizza and a cold six-pack.

So yeah. Real life has been a bit hectic lately and Francis has gotten a very light workload. He’ll probably only see me a couple times this week as we finish the move, and we’ll get back into bootcamp mode next week. I hate to lose any momentum coming off our show, but such is life I suppose.

TL;DR: everyone needs to go see Riverdance, Francis is the sweetest, moving is the actual worst, and I’m not a very fun girlfriend.
