Fumigation Season

This is going to be a short one, folks. I just felt a pressing need to share something that you may or may not know about the Frankenbean.

You obviously all know how much he loves nap time. I’ve made that abundantly clear over the years, and those of you who have met up with us at shows have seen it first hand. Homeboy loves a good rest.

Must sleep all the time

I’ve also mentioned in passing that Francis is not one to keep a neat stall. Like, it’s awful. They basically have to strip it every day because of (1) how dang MUCH he poops and pees and (2) how much he spreads it all around into a big icky coleslaw of disgusting. Our people try really hard to keep his stall clean and he pretty much makes their jobs hell. I’ve seen how thorough of a job they do. And then I’ve come back ~45 minutes later and seen the carnage my boy has wrought.

The logical combination of these facts is something that you may not have thought about for our darling boy.

What do you get when you combine a filthy stall and a horse that loves to stomp around and take naps in it?

You get the world’s SMELLIEST HORSE.

I swear, this horse is one of the greatest gifts of my life and he is an angel upon this earth, but he reeks. His blankets reek. When his fluffy winter coat grows in, it traps the smells SO much more strongly and it gets a million times worse. At least in the summer, rolling in the mud and dust helps cut the stench. No such luck in the winter.

So the other day when he started steaming while I was riding, I knew it was time for a haircut. For more than one reason. Of course I want him to be comfortable while we’re working and that means getting rid of his yak-like fluff.

But this steam also smelled atrocious. I was breathing in the fumes of my pungent steed. Literally being gassed by his propensity for wallowing in his own filth.

There’s my confession for the day. I’m the proud owner of the stinkiest horse in the barn, and it’s reached epic levels.

DYING laughing reading this. May is the NEATEST horse in the barn. One (maybe two) poop and one pee in the corner each day. NEVER lays in it. She would rather die than me covered in her own poop I think lol.

HILARIOUS! Even the bestest most perfect poneh has a flaw 🙂 Gem is the queen of clean. She never rolls in mud, poops and pees politely in one corner and refuses to let her royalty skin touch anything not clean. When riding if she begins to sweat she gets PISSED.

When people comment on how smelly he is, I always tell them “he has other gifts” hahaha

Try taking a horse that has never been in a stall more then a night or two and having her be on stall rest….the smell…..yuuuuuck. Poor girl doesn’t like being stinky, but she is at least keeping it all in one corner.

        Yuck!
I am okay with the stink – means she’s pooping and peeing tons. Spent a night in the clinic over the weekend because she WAS NOT pooping.

It’s funny you bring this up… I was sitting on Eros Tuesday and the steam emanating from him was something else! He’s also a complete and total pigpen when it comes to his enormously round self. The stall is fairly neat, so he obviously works hard to achieve this. Perhaps there’s a support group he and Franky can attend to try and work through this stenchiness?

OMG I relate to this SO MUCH. Duke is a filth monster. He poops more than any horse I’ve met before, and he has no problem laying in his poo and pee. You’re so right about the long hair trapping the smell and its nasty. Added to his usual stench, he has had MTG applied to his legs regularly for some crusty gunk, and last night his post-ride steam smelled like a disgustingly dirty horse plus MTG (which I think smells like smoked meat). It was so bad I legit got off to hand walk him instead of breathing it in.

BAHAHA! I think Pig either had so much DMSO used on him as a young horse OR subsists solely on onion grass. He, like his mother, seems to emanate garlic from his very pores, and he has since day one. However, since he doesn’t live on a diet of 98% garlicy italian food, I am at a loss as to how he comes by this natural odor. Unfortunately clipping doesn’t help. Fortunately I don’t mind the smell. LOL

This is hysterical!! I have a much-smaller-thank-Frankie doggo who sometimes stenches up our house and she doesn’t even sweat. I cannot imagine what it’s like with a 1200 lb piggy who DOES sweat.

    Godspeed with those clippers.

He doesn’t look like he should be a stinky horse, he has such an innocent look. And then it hits you.

Poor guy has to smell himself all the time, you’d think that would be incentive to stay at least a little less gross?!
