What’s in a (show) name?

Readers, I need your help.

Before we can go to any show, Addy’s owner and I have decided that she needs a new show name, and it’s gotta be a good one. You may be wondering why she needs a new one- what’s so wrong with what she has now? And to explain that properly, I need to give a bit of backstory on Addy and her owner.

Addy was bred to be a pony horse at the racetrack out in California, but somehow ended up in the jumping world with her current owner (we’ll call her Owner Lady). Addy got very little playtime due to the abysmal turnout situation there; going under saddle in the arena was the biggest space she had access to on any given day. Owner Lady quickly discovered that Addy is the type of horse that really values her outside time, because by all accounts she was a devil horse who would toss you as soon as she could. Between the poor turnout and her confidence issues, she would spook often and refuse any jump that was even vaguely scary.

Which brings us to her show name: No Remorse. Because she would show no remorse when she dumped Owner Lady on her butt.

In this picture you can really see the malicious glint in her eye as she tries to violently throw me off into the wall.

Owner Lady even warned our trainer- don’t put a beginner on her, and I’m so sorry if she acts up. If you’ve read anything I’ve written about Addy here or here or here, you know that she doesn’t have a spook in her body and absolutely loves jumping! We can’t find anything that even remotely annoys her at all. We’re all demanding video evidence that she was ever crazy like Owner Lady says- she’s a totally different horse.

STOP TAKING OFF YOU WILD BEAST (fun fact- she actually dozed off while I was setting up trot poles for us.)

This is in huge part a testament to the amazing care here (check out Clairvaux’s website!). She gets feed that’s specifically tailored to her needs, a gigantic field to run around and play in every single day, and consistent work under saddle. Not to mention that by the look of her, rolling around in mud is a welcome change from dry California.

Whether it’s the superb care or that she’s simply matured, “No Remorse” just doesn’t fit her as a name anymore. My 12-year-old self is begging me to name her something like “In The Nude” or “A Moped” (can you imagine the announcer saying “number 14 on course is Olivia riding In The Nude? I’m giggling as I type); I think Owner Lady would prefer something a little less hilarious childish.

I told her that I would brainstorm some ideas but I need to cheat. Readers, help me out here!

How did you come up with your horse’s show name? Do you have any suggestions for Addy?

My horse’s show name is his barn name, but I love coming up with show names! It’s a mouthful, but how about Through the Looking Glass because she isn’t at all like what you were told? Then you’d be riding Through the Looking Glass πŸ˜‰ (Alice in Wonderland is an awesome source for show name ideas)

That’s an awesome idea! I love names that sound like a sentence like that. Putting that on the list fo sho.

Simon’s is based off a Paul Simon song, Something So Right. There’s a local trainer here that names her horses all as puns, and has one called “In The Ring” so it’s “Now in the ring we have X and In The Ring.”

I’m absolutely dying for a pun name! We’re just doing some small time stuff, there’s no harm in making people giggle! Getting inspiration from a song is a brilliant idea.

In The Nude would be hilarious! I went through a period of wanting a horse called Country Matters… until I decided that was pushing it a bit xD

In all honestly, I have a giant document (six pages long, three columns per page in 10pt font) of Potential Horse Show Names. Do you have any specifics you like?

    • hellomylivia 02/03/2015 / 10:11 pm

Oh my gosh this document sounds amazing.

I call my brother Addy as short for Alexander (I know, my horse has the same name as my brother and it gets super hilarious and confusing when I’m talking to family), so I was thinking of playing with “Alexandra” in there somewhere. Or use that as a starting point. Owner Lady and I are both kinda blank right now!

I tried to reply to this but I accidentally made a new comment OOPS. My bad!

IT IS INDEED AMAZING. It originally started when I was playing old-school horse sim games but it has evolved into “hmm what if I breed horses in the future” and so on! As for name ideas:

Brandy Alexandra! (Like Brandy Alexander, but, y’know, feminine. I’m a part-time bartender so I love drink names!)

Ad Astra – playing off Addy, and it means ‘to the stars’ in Latin

Grey Lady (I’m pretty sure you can figure out this one…)

If you like song names I would pick something by Adele – I think Rumour Has It is a fun name!

Holy moly you just doubled the size of my list right there. I love all those ideas! Rumour Has it works so well- we’ve got the Addy/Adele thing, and then there were all those rumors about her… I’m going to have lots to discuss with Owner Lady!

      • Amanda Lee 02/04/2015 / 11:20 am

Yay! I’m glad I was able to help you out~ Definitely let us all know when you decide!

      • hellomylivia 02/04/2015 / 11:23 am

Definitely! Owner Lady and I are having a coffee date soon and I plan to be that half-crazed leaser who walks in with 847 pictures of her horse on crossties and an overflowing folder of show names. Updates as events warrant!

What about Alexandra R (change the initial to Owner’s Lady’s first/last name)? That’s very Jumper-y

I’ve been brainstorming for the past day and haven’t come up with anything cute. Apparently I’m not very good at this πŸ™‚ I love the names the others suggested though – especially Through the Looking Glass and Rumor Has It!

    • hellomylivia 02/04/2015 / 9:47 pm

Haha I’m so terrible at this, hence enlisting cleverer minds than mine πŸ™‚ getting so many awesome ideas!

  7. CallyJumps 02/04/2015 / 9:14 pm

Ah, now I realize why your pictures looked somehow familiar! I know Milo’s owner πŸ™‚

My mare got her show name as a joke, because every time we’d try to go show, she’d do something to herself, and we’d end up unable to show. Plus, chestnut mare. Hence, Drama Queen. It quite frequently gets a laugh from the show secretaries.

What about No Regrets? Not so different from her current show name, but an entirely different outlook for an entirely different show season!

    • hellomylivia 02/04/2015 / 9:47 pm

No way, Shannon is the best!! What a crazy small world πŸ™‚

Haha I love Drama Queen, I’ll bet it fits her perfectly. That’s super clever to so subtly change Addy’s name!
